Discussion:
[Unattended] Dell Optiplex 330 and Intel G33

Recently I have been seeing some unusual behavior when I use unattended to
install Windows XP SP3 on a Dell Optiplex 330 (or 360). This is regarding
the color depth setting for the display hardware.

After the graphical portion of windows setup is complete, the video is set
to 1024x768x32. I also checked the unattended.txt file and it confirms
this color depth. As soon as activestate perl starts to install, Windows
displays a dialog that says new hardware was detected, and that the system
needs to reboot. I leave that dialog alone (you know, cuz it's
UNATTENDED), and when activestate perl is done installing, the display
settings change to 8-bit color. The resolution doesn't change (it's still
1024x768), so it's not being sent back to VGA mode.

The graphics hardware is an integrated Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset. I
don't know what the new hardware was that was detected, because when I
look in device manager, everything looks fine (no question marks).

I have tried this with Dell's video driver package, and also with Intel's
driver package, but I get the same results.

I can manually just set the color back to 32 bit, but we have an
application that fails to install if the color depth is set to 8-bit. I
believe that behavior is wrong for the application, but I also don't think
that the system should change the color settings on its own.

Anyone have any clues as to why this happens?
